Some spots may be held for new players until the week before the tournament.
Scramble tournaments are full-day events held to help grow Yankee’s memberships and give new members a taste of how a tournament runs and what to expect. This session, Yankee will be holding scramble tournaments in Massachusetts in men’s, women’s, and coed formats.
How it works?
Players sign up as an individual and are placed on a team with experienced and new players based on their position and Yankee ranking. All participants will receive a full day of play for $30/person. Players have until the Monday before the scramble to cancel out of the tournament with a refund. If a player cancels after Monday, they will receive a refund only if the spot is filled.
The format for scramble tournaments are similar to traditional tournaments with an 8:00 am or 9:00 a.m. start time, pool play and playoffs. Everyone must show up 30 minutes prior to the start time to sign in and pick up a jersey (if you are new). 10 minutes before the tournament, we will release the reservation for any waitlisted players unless notified us ahead of time. Final team rosters will be available at that time.
Please review the cancellation and payment policy for scrambles.
Option 1
If you are a current or former Yankee/USAV member in our region, you will need to renew your annual membership or purchase a single event membership valid for the weekend of the tournament in addition to paying the $35 scramble entry fee using PayPal (this membership can later be upgraded to full membership if you play again).
Go to http://yankee.org/memberships/membership-application. Follow the instructions there to purchase a $30 single event membership OR renew your annual membership for $50. A single event membership will be valid for both days of the weekend of the scramble if you end up playing in another tournament that weekend.
Option 2
If you are a new player to USAV/Yankee (no previous USAV membership in our region), you do not need to pay the PayPal entry fee. Instead, you will purchase a single event USAV membership for $30 (which can later be upgraded to full membership). If you think or know you will play in another Yankee tournament prior to the scramble you are signing up for, you should wait to do this and likely will use Option 1 above. You will still need to follow steps 1-5 below to get your name on the list and the tournament director will follow up with you regarding payment/membership a few weeks before the tournament. Go to http://yankee.org/memberships/membership-application. Follow the instructions there to purchase a $30 single event membership. MAKE SURE THAT YOU PICK THE START DATE TO BE THE FRIDAY BEFORE THE TOURNAMENT YOU WANT TO PLAY IN!!!! It will be valid for both days of the weekend of the scramble if you end up playing in another tournament that weekend. Again, if you will be playing in a tournament prior to the scramble tournament date then you should use Option 1.
After you purchase the membership do the following:
Pay electronically with PayPal. Use the Pay Now button on the tournament registration page to do this.
No additional payment beyond the $30 single event or $55 full membership is needed.
For a 9:00 am start of play you will need to arrive by 8:30 AM. Expect to be at the gym until at least 4:00 pm or longer if your team is competing in playoffs. For earlier starts, plan to arrive 30-45 minutes prior to the tournament start time.

Tournaments are held in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire starting late September through late May each year. Tournaments will host Men’s, Women’s, and Coed 6s tournaments starting at 9:00 AM until 5:00-6:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. A maximum of 5 teams play per court and facilities can hold anywhere from 2-4 courts. The standard format for all tournaments is for each team to play every other team in their pool in two games to 21 points. The top two teams based on record will break pool and advance to the playoffs. Most tournaments use paid referees; however, friendship tournaments require the work team to do the refereeing. Playoffs consist of Semi and Finals played in the best 2/3.
Yankee Rating System
The Yankee rating system is based on an individual person’s skills, such as passing, defence, hitting, setting, serving, and blocking. Ratings start at D and go up to A+ in the following order D, C-, C, C+, B-, B, B+, A-, A, A+. Based on your rating, you can play up to 3 levels below you and any tournament above your rating level. There is a rating committee that reviews player’s ratings monthly and will up a player’s rating based on their play.
